Description: Civil War Store Card for August W. Escherich, Token Maker in Chicago, IllinoisFuld IL150R-1a (copper) R-4 EF Details - very little obverse scratches and scrapes do not have a major impact on eye appealAugust Escherich experimented with token production during the Civil War. He prepared three different somewhat primitive dies to advertise his services. All three dies are dated 1861. This token was struck with a die that does not specify an occupation for Mr. Escherich. A second die describes him as an engraver and the third die describes him as a wire worker. In Chicago business directories, he is listed as a gun maker in 1861, a wire worker in 1862, and an engineer in 1863. It seems that he might have been attempting to establish himself in a business during these years. His token output was very limited, but he did manufacture tokens for a few Chicago merchants. This is a decent example of his most common token which is a scarce variety. Very light obverse scratches and scrapes are noted but do not have a major impact on this token's eye appeal.Shipping is free.
