Thank You all for your continued support!Darmera peltata is a deciduous, herbaceous perennial in the Saxifragaceae family. Its native range is southwest Oregon to northern central California. Familiar names include Umbrella Plant and Indian Rhubarb. It is found naturally along mountain streams, near ponds, and in boggy areas. It can live in standing water. They go dormant in the winter. The Gunnera Genus is similar and related but has much larger leaves and is too big for smaller gardens. It can grow to about 5-7 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide from a clump-forming root system evolved for wet soils. The stems and seeds are edible. The stems are eaten like asparagus in soups or stews. The dark green leaves are rounded, with deep lobes, and turn yellow and red in the fall. The leaves come out before the flowers emerge. They are light pink to bright pink with five petals elevated on a stem six feet up in the air. It grows in full sun to part shade with wet soils like bogs and water gardens. Zones 5-7GerminationAdd 2 inches of garden soil in a waterproof container 6 inches tall. Avoid soil with organic content or fertilizer. Add water until it reaches 1 inch above the top of the soil, then press down gently. Sow the seeds on top of the soil and space them evenly 1 inch apart. Sprinkle a thin layer of white sand over them. Keep in a warm sunny location until the seeds sprout. Wait until a sprout forms one or two leaves that float on the water's surface before you pluck it out. Plant it in a separate container and then move it to deeper water.
