Description: For sale are copies of 20 of the Plays of William Shakespeare as published by The Limited Editions Club in 1939-40. Several of the books show some discoloration on the spines (see photos) but otherwise they look pristine on the outside. On the inside, each of the books has a written name (Louise Guhl) and a date on a front end paper (see photo). Also, three of the books (Henry the Fifth, Richard the Second and Richard the Third) have written notes on 1-2 pages at the very front of the books (see photos). Otherwise, the interiors of all of the books are pristine, and many of these books seem to have never been read. Included with each of the books is their corresponding Commentaries issued by The Limited Editions Club. These Commentaries are very rare and add immensely to the enjoyment of the plays. Note that there is one Commentary for the three Henry the Sixth plays. This major publishing triumph featured the work of many of the era's top illustrators and several of them (such as Eric Gill and Fritz Eichenberg) are among the all-time greats and are included in this lot. Only 1,950 copies of these books were made and the numbers of these books varies, with many of them numbered 109.
