Description: Pre-Columbian Pre-Columbian Moche Vessel Sacrificial Ritual Skull and Andean Condor 450-700 AD Pre-Columbian Andean Moche Vessel Sacrificial Ritual Skull and Andean Condor 450-700 AD This is a Pre-Columbian Andean Polychromed Pottery Ritual Vessel. The imagery of the skull face imagery with large hollowed eyes, and prominent teeth, large downturned mouth and the holes to indicate the nose are typical of a skull in decomposition. The Andean condor on the skull has an additional ritual meaning. The bird with massive talons and strong, curved beak adorning this vessel is an Andean condor, identified by the large caruncle (fleshy protuberance) at the base of the beak and the wattle around the neck. Impressive birds with a wing span of up to ten feet, Andean condors inhabit the high Andes mountains above 9,000 feet. They are primarily carrion eaters, but will occasionally kill for food. Condors and vultures are highly symbolic birds and are a frequent theme in Moche art. They embellish tumis, or knives used in ritual sacrifice, and are often shown pecking at human and animal heads and bodies. Because of their eating habits, they have a natural connection with predation, death, and sacrifice. This vessel is very likely linked to ritual use.
