Description: This is a fantastic and RARE Historic Antique 1896 American 45 STAR Flag, dating to the late 19th century, and comprised of a thin muslin fabric, with hand cut white stars sewn into the blue field. The 45-star flag was proudly flown during the Spanish American War (April 21 - December 10, 1898,) and was officially created in 1896 to commemorate the official admission of the state of Utah into the Union. This is a very large, early and monumental version of this rare flag, at approximately 60 1/2 x 114 1/2 inches (5 x 9.5 feet!) They don't get much bigger than this. Very good overall condition for over a century of age and outdoor display use, with virtually unnoticeable small pinholes and tiny old, repaired areas scattered throughout the surface of the flag (please see photos carefully.) This piece likely belonged to an American military personnel member who served during the Spanish American War era and was kept in the family through the generations as an important heirloom. Acquired from an old estate collection in Los Angeles County, California. Priced to Sell. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. Utah became the 45th state in 1896. It had been attempting to gain statehood for many years, but remained a territory, primarily due to the fact that the Mormon Church and Utah authorities continued to be openly tolerant of polygamy. In 1890, Mormon Church President Wilford Woodruff published a manifesto that denounced the contract of βany marriages forbidden by the law of the landβ. This gave way to Utahβs 1896 acceptance. The 45-star flag was generally used from that year until 1907, when Oklahoma joined the Union. Due to the Spanish-American War (1898) and Teddy Rooseveltβs famous world tour of the βWhite Fleetβ (launched in 1907), this was an extremely patriotic period. The canton and stripes of the flag are made of wool bunting that has been pieced by machine. The stars are made of cotton and double-appliquΓ©d (sewn to both sides) with a zigzag machine stitch. There is a twill cotton binding along the hoist with two brass grommets. The stars of the flag are configured in staggered rows of 8-7-8-7-8-7, which is typical of this star count. During the 19th century, flags with sewn construction needed to be large in order to serve well in their utilitarian function. Lengths of 8-feet and longer are thus frequently seen.
