SCARBOROUGH SEEDS Daikon Radish 100 Seeds LATIN NAME: Raphanus sativus Japanese Minowase Daikon Radish. Daikon is a root vegetable reported to have originated in the Mediterranean and was brought to China for cultivation around 500 B.C. Roots are large, often 2 to 4 inches in diameter and 6 to 20 inches long. Very easy to grow. The flavor is mild compared to other radishes and looks more like a carrot. Daikon has high water content and is very low in calories. It is rich in vitamin C, potassium, and folate is and a good source of magnesium. The leaves contain beta-carotene, calcium, and iron besides vitamin C. The Daikon root has a crisp, mild flavor and is excellent fresh in salads. Roots can be peeled, sliced, grated, diced for soups and stews, boiled whole, or dehydrated as strips. Rabbits, goats, cows, and hogs will enjoy the roots and chickens relish the tops! Excellent for breaking up the soil, improving water penetration, and allowing surface-level nutrients down root channels. This has been deemed "bio-drilling". In research plots, four times as many corn roots penetrated a compact subsoil after a forage radish cover crop as after winter fallow and twice as many as after a rye cover crop. Data suggests that bio-drilling with cover crops like forage radish can substitute for expensive and energy-intensive deep ripping and other mechanical methods to alleviate the effects of soil compaction. They're allelopathic, which means they give off a biochemical (glycosinolate compounds) that inhibits weed growth. Days to Maturity: 45 days Radishes require friable, well-drained soils with a pH range of 5.8–6.8. Sow at any time during the season, beginning in early spring. Use 2–3" wide bands, seeds about 3/4–1" apart (about 10 seeds/ft), 1/2" deep, rows 1' apart. Radishes are adversely affected by hot, dry weather. They remain in prime condition for only a few days and should be grown rapidly with plenty of moisture to be mild, tender, and attractive. If growth is checked, roots may become tough, pithy, and too spicy. Harvest promptly to avoid pithiness, beginning at about 3-4 weeks when roots are the size of a large marble. Bunch or top, cool, and refrigerate. Topped radishes will keep for 3–4 weeks in good, crisp condition if kept at 32°F, 95% relative humidity, and in breathable packaging.SHIPPING Due to the high cost of shipping seeds are shipped as a first class letter without tracking.Order $25.00 or more will be shipped with tracking.
