About the Book:Israel Knohl offers a new perspective on the history and theology of the Priestly source of the Pentateuch. By means of an analysis of specific texts - for example, those that deal with the Sabbath and the Festivals - Knohl demonstrates the existence of two separate priestly sources, loosely connected with what we have known as P and the Holiness Code. The "Holiness School" is shown to be active subsequent to that of the Priestly Torah and, in fact, to be responsible for the great enterprise of editing the Torah.Knohl examines the conceptions of divinity and ritual reflected in priestly thought and legislation in ancient Israel and the changes revealed in these conceptions over time. The Priesthood appears as an elite, closeted within the walls of the "Sanctuary of Silence," drawn toward the hidden, noble divinity ensconced within its shrine. The later stratum of Priestly writings expresses a desire to transcend the limits of the temple and go out into the broad avenues of the nation, even at the price of surrendering the loftiness of earlier faith and practice. The conclusion describes the changes that occurred in the Priests' worldview as an attempt to come to terms with the socio-religious crisis that had brought about a disjunction between ritual and ethics. In response to this crisis, the priests developed a wider conception of holiness, one that integrates ethics and ritual in one sphere. Some Book Reviews:5/5 stars - Groundbreaking!First a disclaimer: I read Knohl's work in the original Hebrew, and I am not in a position to say anything about the English translation. If, however, the translation is faithful, this book is well worth your time. In brief: Since the time of Wellhausen, Biblical scholars have noted that Leviticus 17-26 (referred to as the "Holiness Code" due its frequent use of the Hebrew word for "holy") is distinct in matters of both language and content from the rest of Leviticus, and indeed, distinct from the rest of the so-called P ("Priestly") Source of the Pentateuch. It was generally thought that the Holiness Code was an older, preexisting code of laws that the author(s) of P incorporated into his/their own work. Knohl, in a close reading of various parts of the Pentateuch, proposes that the situation may actually be the reverse: what is generally attributed to P may in fact be a series of ancient priestly laws, which was then collected and redacted by members of what he terms the Holiness School, who also added various editorial glosses. The work of the Holiness School, in Knohl's formulation, may in fact be one of the latest stages of the Pentateuch's redaction. Furthermore, Knohl contends that the work of the Holiness School was born out of an attempt to make the priestly laws, which were mainly concerned with a small set of elite priests and the temple cult, more relevant to the lives of the Israelite laity. All-in-all, the book is a fascinating and provocative read that completely changed the way I think about the structure of the Pentateuch and about the relations between the textual traditions/sources that went into its formulation. Highly recommended.--Noah I. Bassel 5/5 stars - Original Jewish theologianIsrael Kohl is an original writer on Jewish theology and interpreter of the "Old Testament." This is one of his best and most comprehensive books. (P.S. I am not Jewish but with great interest in Christian and Jewish interpretations of the Bible.)--Kip Pla Ying Copyright © 2018-2022 TDM Inc.
