Vintage International Harvester G3170 F Open End Wrench, Reversed & Inverted G

Description: Before we put something on here we figure we ought to know a little something about it, whatever it is. Obviously, with vintage tools there are many knowledgeable collectors who find our descriptions and discoveries to be mundane and obvious. Our only hope is that what we say is accurate so a potential, less knowledgeable buyer is aware of what he or she is purchasing. Having said all of that we turn to the I.H.Co. G3170. The G3170 Wrench was applicable for at least two machines from the early 20th century; Titan Tractor (1911-1917) and the International Harvester Gas Engine (1904-1916). That is as definitive as could be found regrading G3170 in large part because there were, according to IHC aficionados, more than seventy variations on the G3170 Wrench. Even the size of the business ends of the Wrench seem to have varied! The most common stated size is 1 in x 1 1/8 in, but this G3170 measures 1 3/8 x 1 5/8. The Wrench is well worn and the actual size has likely changed over time (see images). So what makes this Wrench worth having? It has that compelling “piece of history” feel to it because it is an International Harvester tool. And even if IHC eventually failed as a business it’s tractors were and are iconic. The other curious thing about the Wrench is that the “G” in the part number is both reversed and inverted. How did that happen? Don’t know. As noted, the Wrench is well worn. While it could be put to use it would serve better as a display and conversation piece. The Wrench will require some light cleaning, but its surface is smooth and not pitted or corroded. It is a substantial piece of metal and weighs about 1 pound and 6 ounces and is 11 1/2 inches long.
